Uniting Civil War Scholars and
Preservationists Since 1956

At the Civil War Roundtable of Wilmington, Delaware, our mission is to promote education and awareness of the Civil War and its impact on our society. We aim to preserve the rich history of this era through lectures, events, and community engagement.
Founded in November 1956, the Civil War Round Table of Wilmington, Delaware, Inc. is one of the oldest round tables in the United States and the oldest of the two round tables in “The First State.”
It began with eight or nine Civil War enthusiasts, including W. Emerson Wilson, editor of Wilmington's daily newspaper, The News Journal. Wilson was instrumental in starting the Fort Delaware Society, which he established to preserve and promote Fort Delaware, a unique historic Civil War site set on an island in the middle of the Delaware River. He often recruited members from the FDS to the round table, a collaborative connection that continues today.
The Round Table seeks to educate, preserve, and learn from the past through programs, lectures, and events with the American Civil War at the core.
